Every bold, vibrant illustration begins with finding the right partnership!
As a writer who isn’t an illustrator, it took time to find someone who could truly see my vision. Since I can barely draw stick figures, I rely on my descriptions to convey my character ideas. Because of this, many illustrators attempted to bring my characters to life but failed before I finally found Martin Melogno.
No AI: Every character is hand-drawn! Sometimes it takes Martin weeks to complete a single illustration because each one goes through multiple stages—sketching, detailed drawing, and finally the color phase. Every design must be approved not only by me, but also by the layout and design team.
Character Creation: When developing each character, my goal was to reflect the richness and diversity of real children’s personalities. T.P. Raccoon embodies the qualities of an everyday curious, relatable child, while Sammy Seagull brings to life the playful spirit of a child who’s always dreaming up imaginative ideas and schemes, just to name a few! My goal is for a child to find themselves or their peers within the different characters.
